Tricoya
Tricoya® is a revolutionary wood-based panel product that has transformed what architects, builders, and designers expect from medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Unlike conventional MDF, which is generally limited to interior applications, Tricoya offers exceptional durability, dimensional stability, moisture resistance, and long-term performance in exterior and high-moisture environments. Manufactured using advanced acetylated wood technology, Tricoya combines the versatility and workability of MDF with performance characteristics traditionally associated with premium exterior building materials. The result is an innovative panel product suitable for exterior cladding, soffits, facades, trim, doors, wet interiors, and countless other demanding applications. Tricoya delivers unmatched performance with minimal maintenance requirements.

What Is Tricoya?

Tricoya® is a high-performance modified MDF panel manufactured using a proprietary acetylation process. During production, wood fibers are modified at the molecular level before being formed into MDF panels. This process dramatically reduces the wood fibers' ability to absorb moisture, resulting in exceptional dimensional stability, superior durability, resistance to fungal decay, enhanced longevity, improved weather resistance, and reduced swelling and shrinking.
The technology behind Tricoya originated from the same scientific platform used in Accoya® wood, one of the most respected modified wood products in the world. Many of the performance benefits that have made Accoya successful are also found in Tricoya panels.
How Tricoya Technology Works

The Science of Acetylation
Traditional wood naturally contains hydroxyl groups that attract water molecules. This causes wood products to absorb moisture, expand, contract, and eventually deteriorate over time. Tricoya addresses this challenge through acetylation, in which wood fibers are treated with acetic anhydride, free hydroxyl groups are converted into acetyl groups, the wood fibers become significantly less hygroscopic, and moisture absorption is dramatically reduced.
Because the fibers absorb far less water, the resulting MDF panel experiences minimal swelling, shrinking, and distortion. The modified fibers also become resistant to fungal attack, significantly improving durability.
Benefits of Tricoya MDF Panels

Exceptional Dimensional Stability
One of Tricoya's most significant advantages is its extraordinary dimensional stability. Compared to conventional MDF, Tricoya exhibits dramatically reduced swelling, shrinkage, expansion, warping, and movement caused by humidity. This stability allows Tricoya to perform reliably in environments where traditional MDF would quickly fail.
Outstanding Durability
Tricoya achieves Class 1 durability, making it suitable for long-term exterior exposure and challenging environments. Benefits include rot resistance, decay resistance, fungal resistance, weather resistance, and extended service life. Unlike many wood-based products, Tricoya requires no supplemental treatment to maintain its durability performance.
Suitable for Exterior Applications
Traditional MDF is generally limited to dry interior environments. Tricoya expands the possibilities of MDF by enabling use in exterior cladding, facades, soffits, fascias, exterior trim, and garage doors. This versatility has made Tricoya a preferred material for architects seeking precision-machined exterior details.
Easy to Machine and Fabricate
Tricoya maintains all the manufacturing advantages associated with traditional MDF. It can be CNC machined, routed, sanded, painted, glued, fastened, and cut to custom shapes. Builders can continue using familiar tooling and fabrication processes without specialized equipment.
Low Maintenance
Because of its dimensional stability and durability, Tricoya requires significantly less maintenance than many conventional wood products. Benefits include fewer repairs, longer coating life, reduced replacement costs, lower lifecycle expenses, and improved long-term value. This makes Tricoya particularly attractive for commercial projects.
Common Applications for Tricoya

Exterior Cladding and Facades
Architects increasingly use Tricoya for modern facade systems, rain screen assemblies, architectural wall features, and commercial building exteriors. Its stability helps maintain precise panel alignment and appearance over time.
Soffits and Fascias
Tricoya's moisture resistance makes it ideal for residential soffits, commercial soffits, fascia boards, covered outdoor ceilings, and architectural overhangs. These applications benefit from Tricoya's resistance to swelling and weather exposure.
Wet Interior Applications
Traditional MDF often fails in wet environments. Tricoya performs exceptionally well in bathrooms, swimming pool facilities, locker rooms, healthcare facilities, and hospitality projects. These applications benefit from Tricoya's resistance to moisture-related degradation.
Sustainability and Environmental Benefits

Responsibly Sourced Materials
Tricoya utilizes wood sourced from sustainable forests and FSC® certified sources. This helps support responsible forest management and sustainable construction practices.
Long Service Life Reduces Environmental Impact
Because Tricoya lasts significantly longer than conventional wood-based panels, fewer replacements are required over the life of a building. Benefits include reduced material consumption, lower waste generation, improved lifecycle sustainability, and reduced maintenance requirements.
Tricoya Installation Guidelines

Cutting and Machining
Tricoya can be machined using standard MDF equipment and tooling. Recommended methods include CNC routing, saw cutting, profiling, edge machining, and drilling.
Fasteners
For exterior applications, it is recommended to use stainless steel 304 or stainless steel 316 fasteners. These materials provide superior corrosion resistance in outdoor environments.
Finishing and Coating
Tricoya performs exceptionally well with water-based paints and high-performance coatings. Its dimensional stability contributes to longer coating life compared to conventional wood products.
